Calling for volunteers!
A unique opportunity exists within Cairns Tropical Pride to learn all about event production right from the planning stage, ie now!  volunteers with skills in social media, writing, marketing, networking, project management and all kinds of communications OR you are keen to learn these skills!

Commitment can be from 2 - 5 hours per week. Some paid work may be available at a later stage.

World Aids Day awareness

The Cairns World AIDS Day Committee would like to invite you to join us in marking HIV Awareness Week 2014.

HIV Awareness Week aims to reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV, remember those who have passed away due to AIDS and broaden the discussion about prevention, regular testing and improved treatment options.

The week will be Launched at the Cairns City Library, 151 Abbott St, on Monday November 24th from 10.30am to 11am.

Speakers include: HIV Positive Speaker Ms Jenny Tasker and Chair of the QLD HIV Foundation Dr Darren Russell.

A Candlelight Vigil will be held on Monday December 1st from 6pm to 7pm to mark World AIDS Day on the Western Lawn opposite the night markets.

Speakers include: Councillor Rob Pyne, Executive Manager Primary Health Care Apunipima Cape York Health Council Mr Paul Stephenson and HIV Positive Speaker Bill Chappelle.

Music by Zelda Da and Dobi Buri.

The vigil will be followed by a Planet Positive evening, 7pm, Cairns RSL, 115 The Esplanade.

Please find attached a poster which can be distributed to your networks.

If you would like to volunteer on an HIV Information and Red Ribbon stall during the week, please contact the QPP Cairns Office ph 3013 5511.

Stalls are being held at Raintrees Shopping Centre (26/11), Rusty’s Markets (28/11), Cairns Esplanade Markets (29/11) and The Tanks Market Day (30/11).



LGBTI Senior Awards nominations

The Queensland AIDS Council is sponsoring the very first LGBTI Seniors Awards- “ Visible and Celebrated”. The award recipients will be announced during Queensland Seniors Week 16-24th August at the QuAC’s 30th Anniversary High Tea . The prizes will be presented at the winners nearest LGBTI Senior’s Expo over the coming months .

The “Visible and Celebrated Seniors Awards 2014” are one way our community can acknowledge and make visible the remarkable contributions, talents and generosity of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans* and Intersex (LGBTI) seniors.

These exciting awards are open to people over 60 and currently living in Queensland.

There are 12 broad categories to celebrate our seniors in, including Lifelong Learning, Performance Arts, Health and Well Being , Recreation and many more .

Nominations are being called for across Queensland with a special category for contributions to Regional and Rural Life to recognise that our seniors are everywhere.

There is no limit to the number of seniors anyone can nominate, although each person can only be nominated for one category.

Gay & Lesbian history project

Calling all gay or lesbian people from Cairns that might be interested in this new oral history project, which is recording interviews with gay men and lesbians across Australia. The National Library will preserve the interviews and it's a great initiative to record our histories for future generations. We would love to include representation from outside of the major cities. Enhance Research are looking for participants to provide feedback to them about the END HIV campaign which is being rolled out currently. They are organising feedback sessions next Monday evening, the 16th of September. It is for the gay male community generally not just for pos guys and participants will be remunerated $80 for their time. Healthy Communities is looking for 2 x Health Promotion Officers to work with the aged care sector in Queensland to support them to be more LGBTI inclusive.
